Description

According to an United Nations food index report, an alarming 33% of all food produced winds up being lost or wasted, costing the global economy close to a trillion dollars each year. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by Aakanksha Bhatia to learn more about cutting our losses by transforming food trash into treasure.

A doctoral scholar in the Indian Institute of Technology’s Department of Management Studies, Aakanksha Bhatia’s work is largely associated with food security concerns in developing economies, including food waste and food security index. That aside, she also currently serves as assistant professor of economics at Galgotias University.

In this episode, Aakanksha Bhatia discusses her research into the behavioral factors that influence food waste, such as storage, food management practices, and shared labor. Additionally, she reveals that the best tool for combating food waste is awareness, and explains why she believes so.

Together, Gabriella and Aakanksha Bhatia discuss personal experiences with food waste, as Aakanksha Bhatia shares some creative ways to turn leftovers into delicious meals, from lentil fritters and fried rice, to cauliflower and chickpea curry. So, tune in this week for practical tips and inspiring ideas that will not only nourish the planet, but also the body.
